P.O.A

The Royal Park of Capodimonte, or Capo di Monte, situated high on a hill above Naples, presented artists of the early 19th century with an irresistible view of Vesuvius’ north side.  An almost identical view was painted by Cowen (see below) but it was painted by many, the allure of Naples’ volcanic topography drawing many artists on their continental tour.

This drawing is, unhappily, unsigned.  However, its presumably German maker probably enjoyed the company of a good number of European colleagues who settled in Rome in the first quarter of the century and who were absorbed in landscape painting, identifying themselves with the tradition of Italianate landscape inherited from Nicolas Poussin and Claude Lorrain.  J. M. W. Turner, who himself painted the view from Capodimonte, took the trouble to compile a list of some of these contemporaries whilst he was there, in Rome, in 1819, citing Franz Ludwig Catel, Gaspare Gabrielli, Nicholas Didier Boguet amongst a good fifteen or so others[1]
