Elizabeth Mary Chettle (b. Kettering 1858) was a British artist who enjoyed a successful career as an artist and an independence that was unusual for a woman at the time. In the 1911 census, her occupation was listed as “artist” and she lived in an 8 roomed house in Sharnbrook with her sister and a maid. As the property owner and head of the household, she would have been eligible to vote in local elections long before other women. As an art teacher, she ran a private art school in Kettering. Her paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy during her lifetime and are now in public collections across the country. (Biography written by the Friends of the Kettering Art Gallery and Museum)
