Condition
Excellent condition. The primary paper support is in very good condition with no significant mechanical damage. It is adhered to the original album sheet in the four corners by adhesive. There is very slight acidity, consistent with age, but there is no discernible discolouration from the recto and the work is stable. The media is in superb original condition with no loss or fading. There is a superb range of techniques and mark-making, including scratching-out and graphite work in the foreground which is in superb relief with no loss of lustre, and which is prominent in a raking light.
The Artist
Hercules Brabazon Brabazon (1821 – 1906) was a British pastellist and watercolour artist. Initially raised in Paris and then East Sussex, he was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge, after which, and having gained financial independence upon the death of his elder brother, he led a life as a gentleman traveller studying art and painting. he was inspired by the works of artists including Velazquez and Turner. A friendship with the artist John Singer Sargent, amongst others, encouraged his pursuit of a career as an exhibiting artist relatively late in life.
