James Gooch (1790- 1872) was born in Wymondham near Norwich where he grew up; he is thought to have attended the Cathedral School, where John Crome, founder of the Norwich Society of Artists was a teacher. He enjoyed a career as an artist, exhibiting 62 paintings with the Norwich Society between 1812 and 1828, and becoming a full member in 1819 until 1828. He spent a large portion of his adult life in Twickenham where he enjoyed family-life, raising his children, but also dedicated himself to public service becoming both Vestry Clerk of St. Mary’s Church and, later, Assistant Overseer of the Poor and Collector of Poor Rates.
