Wells, Sanderson


John Sanderson Wells (1890 – 1940) was a British artist known for sporting and equestrian scenes as well as for paintings of genre subjects, which were mostly interiors scenes with figures in 18th Century costume. He trained at the Slade School of Art and Academie Julian, Paris; he was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, 1903, later becoming honorary treasurer. Between 1895 and 1914 his work was exhibited at the Royal Academy; he was also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, Fine Art Society, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. His work is in many public collections including the Oxford Museum Services, Williamson Art Gallery and Museum, Sheffield Art Gallery and Banbury Town Hall.
