Biography
B. 1881 – 1966
Sydney Robert Jones was a painter, etcher, designer and illustrator who illustrated, with others, ‘Cottages of England’ for The Studio and exhibited widely including Royal Academy, Walker Art Gallery. His work is in the collections of the V&A Museum, the Guildhall Library and Art Gallery, the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and the Mappin Art Gallery, Sheffield.
“Sydney Robert Jones: trained at Birmingham College of Art, and travelled throughout France, Belgium and Holland studying architectural and landscape drawing. In 1907 he exhibited with the Royal Academy in London; his etchings, watercolours and drawings subsequently featured in numerous exhibitions throughout the British Isles. He won a jury commendation at the Paris Salon des Artistes Francais in 1922. Jones is noted for his numerous book illustrations, including plates for Charles Vince’s work England in France. His best-known etchings include: Magnus Martyr, London Bridge, Harvard House, Stratford-upon-Avon, Village Church.” (Benezit, dictionary of British Graphic Artists and Illustrators.
